us lately...

We just had Jane's 15 month check-up.  I was excited to see how much weight she had gained--I was sure it was a lot!  It wasn't...she is still  under 20 pounds (19 lbs. 12 oz) and still  8th percentile <SIGH>.  Her height is at 50th percentile.  It seems the only thing doing much growing is her head (now 62%), though it's not at all big.  So there you have it.  Funny how we want our babies to be fat and our grown-ups to be thin.

A new favorite pastime:  pushing around a doll stroller, although I use the term "doll stroller" loosely.

I've also seen her put milk, shoes, and food in there.  Which is good, because she needs all the practice she can get before she'll be allowed to push baby brother's stroller...

A few more of Jane....

As for non-Jane news, Caleb has a new job!  He is working at R & K Building Supply.  It wasn't something he was looking for, they just called him last month and offered him a job.  Although it's not really his dream job, we decided that with having the baby and everything, a salaried job with benefits and regular hours would be nice for our family.  Besides that, he is still "moonlighting" by drafting plans in the evenings and weekends.

As for me, I am fat!  I feel like I look like I'm due next week, not in 3 1/2 months.  Ugh.  And I huff and puff anytime I have to exert myself in any way.  It probably doesn't help that I am eating horribly and not exercising.  With Jane, I was very conscientious of my diet and exercised somewhat regularly.  I'm nervous to see where this goes...

A few pictures for your scrutiny:

19 1/2 weeks

25 weeks
And in other news, Caleb did a fantastic job on Valentine's Day this year.  He bought me a goofy card (I don't do well with sappy, so he got it just right), surprised me with these beautiful flowers, and took me out for dinner at a Thai restaurant.  Nicely played, husband!

food, folks, and fun...

(sorry, this post is really old...)

How to cure cabin fever?  Surprisingly, our answer was to head to a different cabin!

Back in September, we decided to escape the isolation of our Show Low cabin and head for beautiful Greer.  And there we were able to experience three of my favorite things:  beautiful scenery, good friends, and delicious food!

We were so glad the Humbles and Smiths were willing to make the long drive up and provide some social interaction.  This is something we really missed while staying in Show Low.  Not to mention I was able to fulfill a life-long aspiration--learning to make sushi.  YUM.

that janie girl...

I've been really bad at keeping track with Jane, which was the main reason I decided to blog.  So, I'm recommitting myself.  I really want to keep track of how my children are during the different stages of their lives so that one day if they ask me, "What was I like?" all of the years of child-rearing wearing on my memory won't matter because I KEPT TRACK.  Maybe.

Jane at 15 months:

Jane is just starting to talk.  Actually, she's been "talking" for months now.  She would have full conversations of nonsense words with us, and she'll even end with a self-satisfied laugh and goofy grin.  However, she now has a few words that she uses in her everyday play:  Mama (Maum-maum), Dada (Dad-dad), baby (bayyyy-BEE), eye (hhhhhigh), hot (huh-huh), hi (eye), more (mo), and banana (nana).  For everything else there's some sort of gesture accompanied by a hiss or an animal sound.

In addition to her humble vocabulary, Jane also knows some basic baby sign language (Yes, I taught her baby sign, despite the criticism and mockery I've received from some of my family members).   These include "milk" (not  surprisingly it was the first one she learned), "eat", "more", "book", "water", "hot", "butterfly","hat" and "lotion" (hat and lotion were her own additions).

Her attention span is really short, but she loves books!  Most toys keep her interest for one minute or less, and that's not exaggerating.  However, she will sit and page through a book--even grown-up books that have no pictures--for several minutes at a time.  Offering to read her a book is one of the best ways to distract or placate her.  She also has Jaffy, her Giraffe/bicycle/noise maker.  Jaffy can entertain her for several minutes at a time, although it comes at a cost to Mom and Dad with how loud it is.  The last effective method of entertainment is sorting.  This baby LOVES to sort.  She will take a group of any kind of objects (bobby pins, rocks, oyster crackers, buttons, blocks, etc.) and move them from place to place.  She especially loves it if I give her some kind of container--a baggie, a purse, or a bowl--to put them in. She loves to try to gather them all in her hands at once and move them to a new location or container.

Much to our dismay, Jane appears to have some sort of intolerance to dairy or lactose. We are still working on identifying the problem.  All we know is that if she has even a small taste of something with milk or dairy in it, she has two really bad nights.  The second is usually worse.  On top of that, she is an extremely picky eater.  This comes hard to her parents, who happen to love nearly all foods and like most everything else.  Her menu is pretty limited:  chicken nuggets, hot dogs (usually made of turkey), cereal, bread, crackers, peanut butter, almond milk, grapes, oranges, apples, and other fruits (though not bananas anymore), ketchup, and occasionally french fries.  She does not like eggs, baked potatoes, vegetables, hamburger, or beans.  No wonder she's 8th percentile for weight!!!  If anyone has suggestions on what I can feed her that has no dairy, I  would love some ideas.

Jane is also just learning the value of a good "Peek-a-boo" game.  She actually hides for a moment, then pops out and looks for your reaction.  If your reaction stays good, you are guaranteed a 5-10 minute session of the EXACT SAME THING.  Although sometimes boring for Mom, it's worth her sweet giggles.

Her favorite songs are "Popcorn Popping on the Apricot Tree", "Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star", "How Much is that Doggy in the Window", "Bingo", "Old MacDonald", and "The Itsy, Bitsy Spider".

A few more fun facts:  she has a nutty sense of humor, she likes to hit her head on things, she loves dogs, she likes to dance, she has beautiful hair with curls in the back, she walks like her mommy (in other words, she walks like a duck),

We love our little Janers!

the destroyer...

Caleb and I taught Sunbeams in our last ward.  There was an adorable little girl in our class whom we dubbed "the destroyer".  Anything she got her hands on turned to shreds.  Stickers, paper, crayons, erasers, even earrings.

Well, as it turns out, our own little Jane is not so different.  But instead of shredding things with her hands, she uses her teeth to wreak havoc in our house.

Things that babies ought to be chewing on?  No thank you!  Teething rings and rubbery toys hold no appeal.  Board books that are supposed to be durable?  Yes please!  That thick cardboard is too tempting for her little rodent teeth.  And anything with an adhesive label?  Irresistible.

Her little teeth marks can be seen all around our house.  These are just a few examples:

christmas time...

Christmas is so much more fun with a 13 month old!  It is also more challenging.  All of our Christmas decorations are in storage, so we bought two $2.50 tubes of shatter-resistant ornaments on Black Friday.  As it turns out, it was the only way to go.  None of that, "Our baby looked at the tree for about 10 minutes and hasn't gone near it since," for us!  Every day, for the whole month and at every house we visited, Jane was a tree destroyer.  She never left them alone.

I didn't even get a chance for the before picture, but here is the after.

Doesn't look like a lot of ornanments, does it?
That's because they were hidden all over the house--
I'm wondering if Easter might be more Jane's style.

And so shameless going about her dirty business:

(if anyone knows how to make the video rotate, I'd love to learn!)

We went to Utah for Christmas, and, despite the fact that it didn't snow, it was wonderful!

(the bulky ones that wouldn't fit into the car)

(these last two pictures make you wonder why it
took Caleb and I so long to get married!)

It really was a great Christmas!  Although more complicated, Christmas is definitely enhanced by the bright eyes of little ones.

MERRY CHRISTMAS AND HAPPY 2012!

an identity crisis...

Meet Zeebs

He used to be known as "Jaffy".  That was when I thought he was a giraffe.  Caleb thought he was a hippo.  Someone else thought he was a pig.  And no wonder, I found this at the same place we got Zeebs:

The stripes say, "zebra", but the neck says, "giraffe".  Who are these people and what are they doing making toys for small children?!?  Luckily, we were able to get to the bottom of this mystery.  I checked the store label, and it clearly said, "zebra".  Zeebs could now officially be Zeebs (or Zeebies or Zeberts).

Oh, and since you might be wondering, yes, Zeebs is a boy.  Don't be fooled by the pink coloring, the long eyelashes, or the bow on  his head.  He is definitely a boy.

I bought Zeebs when Janie was just a few days old.  I wanted her to have something snuggly to hold on to.  But when I introduced the two of them, she didn't even seem to care.  Apparently one-week-old babies don't really get attached to toys.

A few months later, we pulled Zeebs out again (he was still Jaffy at this point, but does that really matter?)  Jane took to him instantly.  She would get a huge grin on her face when she saw him, and one of the few sure ways to make her laugh was to turn Zeebs's head around and pretend he was looking for her while saying (in a Zeebs-like voice), "Where is Janie?"

Now, Jane goes to sleep snuggling Zeebs every night.  When it's time for bed, we hand her Zeebs and sing to her.  She often gently nibbles on his bow, tugs at his ears with her teeth, and snuggles him into her face.  When she wakes up, she stands holding to the crib railing waiting for us to get her.  As soon as she sees Caleb or me, she scrambles to grab Zeebs before we scoop her out of her crib.

So despite the species and gender confusion, we love you, Zeebs!  Thanks for being such a good friend to our girl!

birthday baby...

How can one year feel like forever and at the same time be so fleeting?  It is hard to believe that this little baby is no longer measured by mere months!  On November 9th, Jane had her first birthday.  We celebrated on the 17th so Grandma Suz and Grandpa Jer could be there.

Jane loves doggies.  So I decided to do a doggy theme for her cake. Although I'm no baker, I decided to make Jane's cake myself.  Whether or not anyone else was impressed, my simple doggy cake had the desired effect--when it was set before Jane, she started barking.  As far as I'm concerned, that made it a complete success!

Jane didn't dig in as much as we'd hoped.  At home, she loves to grab sticky things and SQUISH.  Maybe she was too focused on barking.  Daddy helped her a bit, and she ended up mostly attacking the muzzle, which was really just a large marshmallow covered in dairy-free icing.

I also tried my hand at some pupcakes (for effect, not taste).  Although I adjusted the original recipe due to laziness (REALLY?  You want me to roll out caramels, and then cut them in the shape of a wagging ear and mount them on a thin chocolate cookie before attaching?  No thank you!), they turned out really cute!

Jane was showered in love and gifts!  She didn't really get the bag thing but did better with a nice torn spot on a piece of wrapping paper.  She also lost her shoe at some point with all the excitement.  It was found under the discarded wrapping paper.

Everyone kept telling me, "You know, Jane won't remember this."  Yes, I already knew that.  A child's first birthday is just another excuse to get together with your favorite people, have some good food, and catch up on life.  Thanks to all those who came!
